Why the online application process?
Swazi Trails is a modern eTourism business: we source a large percentage of our business online, we talk to our customers online, our internal office systems are online and most of our daily operations are computer and Internet based. If you are not comfortable working in this type of environment, you are unlikely to be comfortable working with us.
Similarly we also don’t want, or need, piles of photostat’d certificates, reference letters or forms. Our business commitment is to try to minimise paper usage for both practical and environmental reasons. Our application form link will lead you to an input form which will capture your key information. This will be automatically listed in a spreadsheet for review and follow-up purposes. About Swazi Trails and employment in the tourism industry
Umhlanga Tours (Pty)Ltd trading as Swazi Trails has been active in the tourism industry in Swaziland since 1987. The company is based in the Ezulwini Valley at Mantenga Craft & Lifestyle Centre, which is close to The Gables shopping centre. Swazi Trails offers a variety of tour and adventure services across Swaziland, with most activities departing from the office in Ezulwini. The company is a small business employing between 20-25 staff at any one time. It is privately owned and run by the directors Darron and Anita Raw.
Employees are required to find their own way to and from work, as staff transport is not provided. For those using public transport, The Gables bus station is less than 10min walk away.
The tourism industry is a 7-days a week business and Swazi Trails is open 365 days a year. Employees are regularly required to work on weekends and public holidays.
Swazi Trails prides itself in providing a professional destination management service that is comparable with similar services offered world-wide by incoming tour and adventure operators. For this it requires a high level of commitment, responsibility and reliability from its staff.
Please note that this sector of the tourism industry is typically staffed by young energetic individuals, often seeking experience and exposure in their first or second employment positions. The nature of the adventure tourism industry with its high-cost-low-margins characteristics, does put a ceiling on long-term salary growth. As a company we are happy to see young individuals arrive, grow in confidence and experience and then move on to other sectors of the industry.

Driver and Tour Guide
We are requiring an experienced driver with both a light and heavy duty license, with a Public Driver’s Permit. Excellent English and people skills are required as well as an interest in guiding. Knowledge of Swaziland geographically, history and culture, wildlife and the natural environment are an added advantage. Confidence and knowledge of driving to Mozambique (Maputo) and Johannesburg, Hazyview and Mpumalanga are an advantage. Working hours are 25/26 days on, 5 days off with many demands for after hours work, due to the nature of the tourism industry. Remuneration ranges from E 3,000 to E 5,000 per months based on performance.
Sales Assistant – Counter Sales
Here we are looking for someone with a natural talent for sales. You need to have superb language skills, with the ability to talk and listen. Prior experience is of less importance, although applicants that do have some tourism and/or sales experience will be at an advantage. As this is a junior position which is better suited to a young enthusiastic person who shares our love for adventure, the outdoors and convincing people to get out their butts off the sofa!
Career development will be possible with on-the-job training for tourism-related travel consultant spheres of work. Preference given to Swazi citizens. This is a counter-based position working from either the Swazi Trails office in Ezulwini, or the Swazi Trails Tour Desk at the Royal Swazi Spa Hotel in Ezulwini. Depending on the skills and enthusiasm demonstrated during a probationary period, this position will be remunerated between E 2,000.00 and E 3,000.00 per month.
Office Geek / Graphic Artist
This is a starter position for someone who demonstrates a natural flair for IT and graphic art and wishes to rapidly improve their skills through daily exposure to photographic uploading, graphic manipulation and online applications. A working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop would be advantageous.
Tasks include downloading camera images from daily tours and adventures, selecting and colour-correcting images for upload to facebook and flickr, plus archiving; weekly collation of a newsletter on Mailchimp, plus various graphic art requirements as directed by management. The ability to understand and keep an eye on office IT infrastructure is an added bonus.
Depending on the skills and enthusiasm demonstrated during a probationary period, this position will be remunerated between E 2,000.00 and E 3,000.00 per month.
PA to the Managing Director
This is a newly created post and requires a very dynamic person, who is on the ball. This post is more than a secretarial post and requires a person who is able to write proposals, prepare quotations, research costs and sources of supply, prepare minutes of meetings and collate data for analysis. A proverbial ” Jack” or “Jill” of all Trades is preferred, with modern computer and Internet skills. This is not a “retirement job” and requires an energetic person who enjoys working in a team environment and is an excellent communicator and methodical in getting the job done. A Confidentiality Agreement will form part of the employment contract. This is a desk-based position working from the Swazi Trails office in Ezulwini – 5 days per week Monday to Friday
A salary of between E 4,000.00 and E 10,000 per month will be offered depending on the quality of prior experience and skills.
Senior Travel Consultant
This position as suited to applicants with existing travel trade experience in the fields of reservations management, itinerary development and budgeting/costing. In this instance we are looking for someone with some prior experience. You will need to provide traceable references for previously related positions that you have held. This is a desk-based position working from the Swazi Trails office in Ezulwini. The position requires someone with skills to manage reservations via our online reservations system (web-based), to deal with email, telephonic and walk-in booking requests and the ability to cost and quote customised services.
As a minimum requirement the incumbent is required to be proficient in MS-Word, MS-Excel and email/web related programs. A high standard of written and spoken English is required. We would also prefer the incumbent to be SiSwati-speaking, although this is not essential.
This is a desk-based position working from the Swazi Trails office in Ezulwini. Depending on the quality of prior experience and potential to add value to sales, this position will be remunerated between E 3,500- and E 7,500.00 per month.
Accounts Clerk/Admin Assistant
This position is suited to applicants seeking a career in Office Administration or Accounts. We are looking for an individual who has the right aptitude for working with numbers, is diligent and methodical in their approach and who enjoys back-office accounting type work. This is a desk-based position working from the Swazi Trails office in Ezulwini. The position includes, but is not limited to inputting, reconciling and managing debtors, creditors, petty cash and stock. Some analysis and cost control reconciliations are required on a repetitive basis. Work is done predominantly on MS-Excel spreadsheets with inputting of invoices into PASTEL.
The minimum requirements are speed, accuracy and general proficiency in working with numbers. Good written and spoken English and being able to work comfortably in a fully computerized environment is important. A working knowledge of MS-Word, MS-Excel and email programs is required as a prerequisite. Additional skills can be learnt on-the-job, however applicants with prior demonstrated experience in accounting, clerical work, Pastel Accounting and knowledge of VAT and PAYE would be at an advantage.
Contactable references are required for any previously-held employment. A starting salary of between E 2,000.00 and E 4,000 per month will be offered depending on the quality of prior experience and skills. This position holds potential for significant salary growth for an employee who adds value to the company and assumes greater responsibility.
We require an internationally recognised white-water rafting qualification and associated first aid certificates. The main focus of this position is trip guiding on the Great Usutu River. This is not a “beginner” position and we require someone with the requisite skill set to satisfy our commitment to providing an internationally comparable level of safety and on-river risk management. Guides with additional adventure-industry related skills in areas such as abseil supervision, MTB’ing, caving, hiking, ATV/quads and teambuilding will have an advantage. Our preference is for a Swazi citizen with the requisite levels of skill and certification, however applications are open to all nationalities.
This is a contract-based position for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of one year. Long-term contracts will only be offered to Swazi citizens. Salary and benefits negotiable based on skills and experience. Accommodation can be provided for foreign guides.
Trainee Adventure Guide
This post is available to Swazi citizens only. Suited to young athletic persons with good people skills, spoken English and a love for the outdoors. Main focus of this position is raft guiding in an assistant-guide support role. On-the-job training will be provided in preparation for completing Level 1 and Level 2 white-water raft guide qualifications, and Level 1 Abseil Supervision. The applicant must be a very confident swimmer. Inability to swim confidently in rough water will present life-threatening risks… don’t try bluff your way through this!
Applicants who are able to demonstrate any existing skills in adventure guiding for cycling/MTB’ing, climbing/abseiling, motorcycle/quad riding or first aid will be at an advantage. This position is on a contract basis only, until such time as the requisite qualifications are awarded.
Website Translator (this project was completed)
This post is a short-term contract to translate material on our company websites. Experience with Joomla and WordPress are required, as well as excellent written Dutch, German or French.
Preference is for a locally-based person, however we are happy to contract for this work to be done entirely online by a foreign-based individual with suitable high-speed online access.
This position requires 8 hours work per day, 5 days per week for a period of 6 months. Contract fee negotiable based on level of demonstrable skill.
Book-keeper / Accountant
This position requires a person with a minimum of 5 years experience in book-keeping and/or accountants management.
The position requires the applicant to handle all aspects of administration and accounts management – from basic inputting to more advanced analysis and reconciliation eg: Checking and preparing invoices for payment and filing. Managing of petty cash. All inputting functions on PASTEL ( inputting of payments, receipts, journal entries, bank recons, invoicing and completing PASTEL accounting to Trial Balance). Presentation and analysis of monthly accounts to directors. Management of vehicles and fuel accounts. Maintaining financial worksheets and analysis thereof. Preparation of salaries including PAYE and SNPF deductions. Submission of annual IRP5 recons and related submissions. Submission of annual company returns, VAT payments and recons thereof. Administration of Trading and Company Licenses. Daily, monthly and annual stock controls as required. Maintenance of asset list. To actively participate in initiating improvements and maintaining systems and controls throughout the business.
The applicant needs to be accurate, diligent, trustworthy, figure orientated and experienced in finances. From past experience, this position can managed as a half-day or “mornings only” position by someone who is very fast and experienced, or as full day position for someone that is more methodical and/or less experienced.

Quad Trail Guide / Semi-skilled mechanic
Swazi Trails runs a quad trail operation adjacent to the Royal Swazi Spa hotel. We are looking for a quad trail guide, who is both a “people-person” and a mechanical enthusiast. Our ideal candidate is someone who is young, energetic, presentable, confident and with excellent spoken English. Such a candidate should have experience with his or her own motorcycle or quad bike and a working knowledge of basic bike mechanics. We are looking for a person who is able to clean, maintain and service the quads on a daily basis between quad trails, such that the quads are in optimal condition at all times. Such requirements do not include major mechanical overhauls, but the experience and common sense to deal with adjustments to brakes, idling, tyre pressures, wheel alignment and the regular requirements of sparkplug, oil and filter servicing.
This position requires work on weekends and over public holidays. Salary is split between a monthly retainer and a per day performance bonus for trips run.
